What is the sevDesk TechRadar?

The sevDesk TechRadar shows the technologies we are using at sevDesk. We arrange the technologies in a ring and four categories. Four circles inside the ring show how we use that technology:

  • Active - Technologies that we use in production. We know a lot about these technologies and use them on a daily basis.
  • Trial | Test(ing) - Technologies that we are using for protoypes and internal projects. These projects are not business-critical. We actively evaluate the potential of the technology.
  • Evaluate | Observe | Watch | Consider | Asses - Technologies that might become relevant for sevDesk soon. We might consider using these technologies in the future for prototypes or production applications.
  • (On) Hold | Pause - Technologies that we do not use for projects. Existing projects using that technology will be migrated to active alternatives.

What is the purpose?

The Tech Radar is a tool to inspire and support engineering teams at sevDesk to pick the best technologies for new projects; it provides a platform to share knowledge and experience in technologies, to reflect on technology decisions and continuously evolve our technology landscape. Based on the pioneering work of ThoughtWorks, our Tech Radar sets out the changes in technologies that are interesting in software development — changes that we think our engineering teams should pay attention to and consider using in their projects.

How do we maintain it?

The Tech Radar is maintained by the sevDesk Tech Lead Chapter. The Tech Lead ChapterDev chapter self organises to maintain the Tech Radar documents, including this public version. Assignment of technologies to rings is the outcome of ring change proposals, which are discussed and voted on in quarterly Tech Radar meetings. The Tech Radar depends on active participation and input from all engineering teams at sevDesk.
